Ramon Schenk Again, the genres... 2010-09-19 16:44:46 Under Review Editing
Patrick Lemaire Hello Ramon,
It doesn't fit the site's definition of superhero "Stories involving people in outlandish clothing fighting crime." Starlin clearly writes space opera and not superheroes here.
I include the superhero label when the character fights criminals on Earth or when other super-heroes (costumes crimefighters) are present, hence the label for the issues involving Spider-Man and Avengers. But the whole series occurs in outer space. Starlin's Adam Warlock is a Fantasy/Sci Fi character. The only things in common with superheroes who put on an outlandish costume to fight crime are the colorful costume and the powers. But it isn't outlandish in the sci fi/fantasy environment, actually this is a staple of space opera. Warlock's adventures on Counter-Earth would be different as the costume is outlandish in a modern Earth setting. But superhero is a subgenre of sci-fi (by way of Doc Savage and Superman) and not the reverse. Not only is the encompassing genre SF and not the reverse but the typical superhero elements where a person dresses in outlandish costume to hide his secret identity in order to fight crime are irrelevant in the Warlock epic. The Marvel Universe is an agglomeration of different genres and influences (fantasy, sci-fi, romance, western, superhero) but it doesn't mean I have to add a superhero label to every series set in the Marvel universe. I just removed such a superhero label from Tales of Asgard and I guess many Thor stories are probably just fantasy.
Best,
Patrick

Ramon Schenk Hello Patrick,

I have put the matter before the e-mail list and about a dozen people have chimed in. Although some understood that you see science fiction elements in the Warlock feature, no one felt the genre should be purely "science fiction". Most suggested either "superhero", "superhero; science fiction" or "science fiction; superhero".

So if you could please edit the genres and re-submit them, I will try and approve them as fast as I can.

Best,
Ramon
