While residing in an inn's stables, he over-hears Sir Mordant and his men, who plan to kidnap King Victor. He is found out and is thrown to his death, but survives and heads out to warn the King of the plot. Saving the King from Mordant, the smithy is rewarded by the King to become the Black Knight.
