After her date with Bill had been a dud, Joan had lied to her room-mate about it and pretended to go out on subsequent dates with him. But Iris had secretly been seeing Bill and used Joan's 'dates' to get some privacy with Bill.

He personally knew Nigel to be a worthless no-good and deliberately gave her advice that would break them up.
