Sublime is revealed to be a sentient bacteria colony from the dawn of life on Earth, living inside all other forms until Mutants emerged as the first species that might challenge it. As the X-Men fall in battle against the Sublime-possesed Beast, they manage to reawaken Jean's true memories. She extracts and extinguishes Sublime, and manifesting as a White Phoenix of the Crown reaches back through time, telling Scott to live. Back in the present day, we see Scott and Emma's graveside conversation once again, but this time when Emma asks Scott to stay with her and reopen the school, he kisses her and says "Yes".
