Luella Pearce has a crush on her high school math teacher, John Goodwin. But John is seeing another woman, Nan McLean. John decides to go back to college to get his doctorate and Luella decides to go to the same college. While John is at college, Nan decides to marry another man. When John's car breaks down, Luella gives him a ride, sparking a romance between them that ends when John proposes to Luella when she graduates from college.
Roger Hardin flies his new bride, Edith, back to Massachusetts to meet his family. While there Edith meets a family friend, Lydia, who is unhappy about the marriage between Edith and Roger. Lydia tells Edith that she plans to get Roger back. Edith sees Roger kiss Lydia and is about to leave. Roger stops her and explains it was just a good-bye kiss on the cheek, since Lydia had promised to leave the married couple alone.
Terry Convery goes horseback riding on her vacation. Her ride is interrupted by a herd of cows, leading her to meet a dairy farmer, Frank Salomy. Frank asks Terry if she believes in love at first sight. Soon Terry quits her job to marry Frank.

Linda wants Buck Warden, but Buck is dating Hallie Drew. Linda arranges a skating 'accident' to break up the pair. Hallie guesses that Linda is acting more hurt than she really is to get Buck's attention, but Buck believes Linda instead. When Buck hears the gossip about Linda's 'accident', Linda decides she can no longer lie to Buck and confesses to him. Buck tells Linda that he was planning to ask her out anyway and she didn't need tricks to date him.
Dan and Fran become neighbors for the summer at Lake Tohopac. They fall in love, but Fran is torn because of memories of Colin, a previous love she had met at the same lake. Colin had left Fran and she now wonders if Dan will do the same. She decides that Dan's love has the depth that Colin's never did.
