A great pianist, Bob Conrad, rents a cottage by the lake to sort out his life after his hands have been badly burned. Mary's dad owns the cottage and Mary helps Bob overcome his depression. In the process, she falls in love with Bob. When his hands have healed, she shows him he can play the piano again. Bob is excited and tells Mary his wife will be delirious with joy at the news. As Bob returns to his home, Mary is shocked and saddened since she had not known Bob was married.
She had an ideal marriage to Dan. When Dan tells her he wanted to get his watch fixed, she decides to buy him a new watch while he is on a business trip. But Dan's plane crashes over the Rockies with no survivors and she is never able to give him the watch.
Scott and Tess are happily married for a month. Then Scott's step-sister, Lila, arrives. Scott seems to go to Lila for help on all important matters rather than go to his wife. A doctor tells Tess he thinks Scott has a mother fixation for Lila since Lila had once saved his life. Tess stages a canoe accident that results in a change of attitude for Scott in his relationship with both women.
Emmy Kellog's sister, Doris, decides to dump longtime boyfriend Bob in favor of Dave Carroll since she is convinced Bob will be a mechanic all his life and Dave has better prospects. Emmy thinks Doris is being cruel, but has secretly loved Bob herself. After Bob is dumped by Doris, Bob sees Emmy and soon realizes that it was Emmy he was in love with.
Lee and Nan Carstairs seemed to have a perfect marriage. Then one night Lee failed to come home from work. The car was found four hundred miles west, but Lee was not found. After being missing for months, Lee shows up at home. He explains that he had been robbed and hit over the head, causing amnesia. Remembering only Nan's name, he suddenly remembered everything and came home.
