Photographed escaping from a burning building, Jenny asks newspaper reporter Dick to keep her picture out of the newspaper. He agrees and they soon fall in love. Jenny refuses to discuss her past and suspects Dick is just using her for a big story. When she learns her mother has died, Jenny confesses to Dick: she dated gangster Howie Garth and was with him when he was arrested. She fled to avoid scandal. Jenny asks Dick to print the story to prove she’s a decent person.

Victor and Fran are newlyweds. Fran suspects Victor’s ex-girlfriend May is trying to win him back. At Victor’s birthday party, she jealously accuses them of having an affair, but Victor says he has been working late to earn enough money to buy Fran a proper wedding ring. Fran apologizes and reconciles with her husband.
Rod adores Claire but she only tolerates him. She borrows his car and strikes a pedestrian, then asks Rod to take the rap: he is sent to prison for a year. Claire falls in love with Kent, and hides this from Rod when he is released. Claire tricks Rod in driving without a license and causing an accident, then urges him to flee rather than be sent back to prison for a parole violation. Kent overhears and breaks up with Claire. The judge tells Claire “your conscience will exact its own punishment” and warns Rod “next time see that the person you give your love to is worthy of it!”
Rita leaves her small town of Mayville and boyfriend Chet to teach in the mining town of Kadence. She’s courted by Victor but considers him too violent and returns to Mayville. Victor follows her there and explains he was just trying to protect her. Chet attempts to swindle Victor but Rita exposes his plan and reconciles with Victor.
