Ace Morgan; Rocky Davis; Prof Haley; Red Ryan; June Robbins; Jacquard
The Challengers hunt Jacquard, an international criminal in a gold lightning-suit and helmet. Ace lectures that overconfidence will kill them, but the guys laugh it off. In an amusement park, Prof and Red pursue Jacquard on a roller coaster. But Prof changes the plan, and both get zapped by Jacquard’s helmet. Jacquard issues a challenge: He’ll beat each Challenger at their speciality. Accepted. Prof dives for a sunken wreck with a batch of gadgets, but Jacquard gets the drop. Prof washes up on the beach. Red climbs a mountain, but finds Jacquard took a shortcut. Red gets hurt and needs a guide to reach shelter. Rocky wrestles Jacquard in an empty arena. Jacquard uses dirty tricks, but Rocky prevails, until the villain blacks the lights and Rocky gets conked. Shaken, the guys compare notes - and decide Ace is spoofing them for overconfidence. Except Ace agrees to fly a duel as Jacquard flies by! The two pilots dogfight until Ace’s plane explodes. The guys are distraught - until they learn Ace faked the crash and June flew as Jacquard! Ace still lectures on overconfidence. He captured Jacquard days ago - except the villain’s escaped, and drops the roof on our heroes. Prof applies a match to the sprinkler system and shorts out Jacquard’s lightning-suit. Rocky brags, “Only a Challenger can beat a Challenger!"
Ace Morgan; Rocky Davis; Prof Haley; Red Ryan; Raymond, the Robot Challenger; Larue
The Challengers are trapped on the sea bottom next to a ticking bomb when a ten-foot “Challenger Robot” plucks them free. The talking robot leads them to a desert hideout and Larue, a bald scientist in a lab coat. He created “Raymond, the Challenger Robot” as a tribute. In days to follow, Raymond proves his worth, but secretly radios progress back to Larue - which is intercepted by our heroes. “It’s a Trojan Horse - a robot spy!” Larue plots revenge on a nearby missile base: an underground crawling bomb will destroy it. Larue gloats to Raymond, who replies, “Trick or treat!” Raymond cracks open to reveal Prof and Rocky inside: a Trojan horse-in-a-horse! Larue changes the bomb’s course and disappears through a hatch. The Challengers are stuck - unless they can pull the same trick twice. Larue again summons Raymond (and again gets two Challengers) and sends him to guard the bomb. The bomb explodes on time. The Trojan-Challengers grab Larue. Ace and Red arrive and explain the base is safe! Raymond was built too much like a Challenger: he intercepted and detonated the bomb early! “Like us, he was living on borrowed time, but his time ran out.”
