This story is a reasonably accurate fictionalised account of the destruction of the Dresden-Class Light Cruiser SMS Emden in November 1914. In reality the Emden's second-in-command was Captain-Lieutenant Helmut von Mücke. Though his name is incorrect, he did survive his ship's destruction while commanding a landing party, as depicted.
