Various script and plot elements in this “new story about an old fairy tale” indicate that it was most likely written by classic animation writer Michael Maltese. As the sixties wore on, Maltese found less regular animation writing work at Hanna-Barbera, when the studio’s Saturday morning output began to skew more toward adventure and superhero shows, and returned to writing comic book scripts for Western Publishing. He largely concentrated on Warner Bros. and Walter Lantz characters, and appears to have written for Western’s Pink Panther title as well. The characterization of Wile E. Coyote (as he appeared in Maltese and Chuck Jones' Bugs Bunny theatrical shorts), and Maltese’s tendency toward fairy tale spoofs in his cartoon scripts, as well as other touches, point to him as the writer of this story.
