- Synopsis
- Iron Man is weakened from his battle with the Black Knight. He has just enough energy left in his armor to summon Pepper for aid. She drives him to the Stark factory where he recharges. An aggrieved Senator Byrd telephones and threatens Stark with a subpoena. Pepper, who still hates Tony Stark, shows concern for Iron Man. In the hospital, Happy Hogan is treated with Stark's untested Enervator device. Happy turns into the Freak and goes berserk. He tussles with Iron Man and then runs away.

- Synopsis
- Iron Man battles the Freak but is defeated when his power runs out. The Freak makes his way to Stark's lab where Pepper is dealing with an angry Senator Byrd. Byrd thinks the Freak is trying to attack Pepper and courageously tries to defend her. He is thrown across the room by the Freak. Pepper faints. The Freak lifts Pepper in his arms but drops her from an upstairs window when shot at by the police. Iron Man breaks her fall with his repulsor ray and then, back in the lab, fires his Enervation Intensifier at the Freak in a bid to change him back into Happy.

- The Freak turns back into Happy, but loses his memory. Senator Byrd, with a police escort, serves Stark with a subpoena and orders him to go with them to Washington. Pepper is disgusted at Stark's casual attitude and seeming lack of concern for Happy. Enter the Mandarin, who drives off some invading Chinese soldiers and, at the same time, abducts Stark on his way to a court hearing by means of a teleportation device. Mandarin dumps Stark's briefcase into the moat of his castle, in case it contains an explosive device, and then prepares to unleash Ultimo, his greatest creation.

- The Mandarin unleashes his Ultimo robot and then tries to kill Tony Stark. Stark is saved by his protective chest device which has served as a shock-proof vest. He dives into the moat to retrieve his brief case containing his Iron Man armor. An enraged Ultimo routs the invading Chinese soldiers from last issue. Iron Man, hopelessly outmatched, tries to stop the giant robot's rampage. Senator Byrd, believing that Stark showed contempt of Congress by not showing up for his court hearing, closes down Stark Industries.

But on returning home, he discovers to his horror that Senator Byrd has not taken his failure to show at the sub-committee investigation lightly...

- Tony Stark finds his money has been impounded, his factories shut down, and there's a warrant out for his arrest. The Avengers cannot help him as they are not home. As Iron Man, he strolls down to the waterfront to think. But from the waters rises Warlord Krang's flagship. On the run with Lady Dorma, he sees a chance to impress her, and attacks. As she tries to stop him, Iron Man strikes back, sending his ship fleeing. Desperate, Iron Man flies to his factory and crashes in through a skylight. But he barely gets to his feet when he's suddenly confronted with Sub-Mariner!

Part 1 of 3. The Avengers were apparently off fighting Power Man and The Swordsman during this story, as shown in THE AVENGERS #29 (June 1966). Warlord Krang plot continues from TALES TO ASTONISH #81 (July 1966), even though that issue probably came out a week or two after this one. Because of Stark's problems with the law, SHIELD was forced to seek other sources of weapons and technology, seen in STRANGE TALES #146-149 (July-October 1966).

- A frenzied Sub-Mariner attacks the weakened Iron Man in his lab. Iron Man tricks Subby into throwing him into a reinforced safe room where his is able to close the door and recharge his armor. Sub-Mariner is also in need of a recharge so he flies off to take a quick dip in the ocean. Meanwhile the police arrive at Stark Industries and accuse Iron Man of wanton damage. Pepper and Happy have turned up too. A refreshed Sub-Mariner prepares himself for round two!

An air force jet intercepts the giant rocket and fires a warning shot. Titanium Man rips his way out of the rocket and is immediately confronted by Iron Man.

- Iron Man battles Titanium Man in the skies above Washington D.C. A large crowd gathers to watch them fight. Pepper and Happy are among the onlookers. Titanium Man fixes Iron Man with a paralysis beam. Iron Man short circuits the electric beam by pulling out a live wire from his armor! Titanium Man then turns his beam on Pepper and orders Iron Man to surrender.

Titanium Man flies off to his supposed rendezvous with the submarine but is abandoned by his masters before he gets there and is left to languish in the ocean. Iron Man is a hero, and even Senator Byrd is rooting for him. When Tony Stark appears Pepper hugs him - she seems to have forgiven him for his recent seeming transgressions! Happy, memory intact, now knows the truth -- that Stark is Iron Man!
