Kathie Thomas thought that her dreams had come true when she was hired as the personal secretary for Patricia Harlow, one of the top dress buyers in the city. Not long after she started, she met Walt Corby, a dress manufacturer who was dating Pat. But when Corby's business hit the rocks, Walt became persona non grata for Pat. Kathie decides to help Walt around the office, then passes on an idea of Pat's to Walt that turns his business around. When Pat invites Walt to dinner to "make up", Kathie can't resist telling Walt that Pat's a liar and a cheat... and that she has fallen in love with him.
Parkville was a quaint New England town full of history. Romance between Judy Dunn and Lee Sanders was going great until Peter Byrnes arrived to write a book on the town's history. Peter was different from Lee;quieter, more calm, but also much older. Judy was impressed that Peter found her attractive but she soon began to have mutual feelings towards him. Judy's friends made fun of her dating "the old bookworm". Trying to please her, Peter took her to a dance, but left when he found the music too loud. Judy remains for a while but then runs after him realizing that he was "the one".
Jennie Traynor loved to dance and dreamed of stardom. When talent agent Bill Ryan came to her small Virginia town her boyfriend, Pete, encouraged Jennie to audition. Winning the contest Ryan took Jennie to New York but the only job he could get her was as a chorus line dancer in a sleazy club owned by Roy Tindal, who she becomes romantically involved with. He gets her a part in a Broadway show but Jennie soon discovers his brutal, criminal side. Pleading with Pete to help her he comes to her rescue, but upon her return home Jennie discovers Pete has found another woman while she was away.
As the mayor's daughter Jean Davies is always in the public eye. This displeases her father who insists that she stop being the headline in Burt Medford's gossip column. Jean goes to the newspaper office to have a stern talk with Medford but finds him charming and accepts a date with him. Romance blossoms until Jean discovers Medford's dishonest reporting and breaks up with him. Medford threatens to run a smear campaign against her father unless she returns to him but the mayor is re-elected. Medford attempts to apologize to Jean but she turns him down, choosing honor over love.
