For this issue, the entire cover image has been "straightened" to show Jerry zooming along on his roller skate on a flat sidewalk surface. The original printing for Tom and Jerry Comics (Dell, 1949 Series) #130 (May 1955) and its first reprint in Tom and Jerry (Western, 1962 Series) #229 (April 1966) show Jerry riding his skate down a sidewalk incline (thus, accounting for his speed?) with the frightened, jumping Tom at a similar angle. Owing to the times, a UPC box is also added to the lower left corner of the cover of Tom and Jerry #309.
Fourth-Wall Flouting: Jerry directly addresses the readers on page ten, panel six, to close the story.
The gags in this story, as Tom more and more desperately tries to keep the quiet – lest his cake be ruined, are evocative of the very first Tom and Jerry animated theatrical short: “Puss Gets the Boot” (1940).
