The fort is eventually overrun by the Picts and Valenso atones for his transgressions against Thoth-Amon when he is killed by a demon. Conan saves Valenso's niece and her servant girl and is rescued by a delegation of Aquilonian noblemen who ask him to help overthrow their mad king. The ever ambitious Conan agrees.
