Synopsis
We get some backstory about how a disease that affects only men has swept through imperial Japan and leaves only about 10% of men alive. Women quickly move into the governing roles, and men become protected and pampered and prized. Yoshimune Mizuno is the sole son of a low-ranking samurai family, and to increase his family's wealth and position, he offers to serve in the Ōoku -- the private inner court of the Shogun occupied completely by men. Yoshimune makes an initial impression on the Ōoku with his stunning looks and his excellent fencing skills.

Synopsis
A new shogun comes to power, and Yoshimune gets promoted to a groom of the bedchamber. As part of this promotion, he gets to have his own wardrobe designed for him. He chooses a simple black kimono. His choice somewhat mirrors the new shogun's approach to government, as she too spurns much of the excessive expenditures of the court and prefers simple clothing.

Synopsis
The new shogun chooses Yoshimune as the first of the grooms to visit her bedchamber. Unfortunately, the first groom to sleep with the shogun, by tradition, must be killed for violating the maidenhood of the shogun. The shogun finds this practice unsavory, and she prevents the execution and sets Yoshimune up as a wealthy trader. This frees Yoshimune to marry his childhood love, O-Nobu.

Synopsis
The new shogun calls an audience of the most attractive of all the men in the Ōoku. She then dismisses them, explaining that she must cut the budget of the palace and these men will have no trouble finding marriages outside the palace. She also goes to the Ōoku library and reads the chronicle of the palace. She learns that before the disease, men ran the country, and women were considered the weaker sex.
