Issue Notes
Bloodstar ist im wesentlichen eine werkgetreue Adaption von Robert E. Howard's Kurzgeschichte "The Valley of the Worm", die erstmals in Weird Tales (February 1934)erschien. Allerdings wurde die Handlung von einer nicht näher bestimmten, fernen Vergangenheit in eine nicht näher bestimmte, postnukleare Zukunft verlegt und die Namen einiger Charaktere verändert. Aus Niord wurde Bloodstar.
Bloodstar wurde (zunächst unter dem Arbeitstitel "King of the Northern Abyss") von Richard Corben ursprünglich in schwarz/weiss mit Grautönen gestaltet und erstmals veröffentlicht in Bloodstar (Morning Star Press, 1976 Series) #[nn], in Deutschland in Schwermetall (Volksverlag, 1980 Series) #3-8.
Eine erweiterte, in Kapiteln mit einleitenden Texten versehene Fassung, ist in Bloodstar (Ariel Books, 1979 Series) #[nn] erschienen. Die Einleitungstexte wurden für diesen Band übernommen, die Comicseiten dazu allerdings aus der nachträglich kolorierten, in Heavy Metal (HM Communications, Inc., 1977 Series) 1980-1981 veröffentlichten Fassung. Die Kolorierung wurde zwar in der von Corben speziell entwickelten Technik vorgenommen, aber nicht von ihm selbst. Viele Feinheiten der ursprünglichen Version gingen dabei verloren.
Die deutsche Ausgabe wurde zusammen mit der von Toutain Editor herausgegebenen Ausgabe in Spanien gedruckt.
Howard's "The Valley of the Worm" wurde erstmals in Comicform in Supernatural Thrillers (Marvel, 1972 Series) #3 (April 1973) von Roy Thomas und Gil Kane adaptiert.
