- Jonsey compares the war to ants fighting in the ground beneath them. When fighting breaks out the US soldiers are decimated until only Jonsey is left. He tries to run away but sees the ants and remembers like them, he cannot escape. He prepares himself for battle, facing the enemy hordes alone.
