The Flipper series was based on an American television series of the same name telecast on NBC from September 18, 1964 to April 15, 1967. Flipper is a Bottlenose Dolphin, and the companion animal of Coral Key Park Warden Porter Ricks (portrayed by Brian Kelly), and his young sons Sandy (Luke Halpin) and Bud (Tommy Norden). Andy Devine, Ulla Strömstedt, and Dan Chandler had supporting roles. The television show was an adaptation of the 1963 film Flipper and its 1964 sequel, Flipper's New Adventure. Luke Halpin starred in both. Eventually, the two juvenile stars outgrew their roles, and, though a new family was written into the show, CBS declined to renew. The series has been called an aquatic Lassie, and was shown in syndication for many years.
