Power Girl first appeared in All-Star Comics (DC, 1976 series) #58 (January-February 1976). She first used the secret identity of Karen Starr in Showcase (DC, 1956 series) #99 (April 1978). In Secret Origins (DC, 1986 series) #11 (February 1987), it was revealed that Power Girl's history was changed by the Crisis on Infinite Earths such that she was now the time-lost granddaughter of Arion of Atlantis. Power Girl gave birth to a being later called Equinox in Zero Hour: Crisis in Time (DC, 1994 series) #0 (September 1994). In JSA (DC, 1999 series) #50 (September 2003), the spirit of Arion told Power Girl that he had lied to her about her past and wasn't her grandfather. While fighting in the bottle city of Kandor II, she was called Nightwing (and Supergirl was Flamebird), beginning in Supergirl (DC, 2005 series) #6 (April 2006).
