The Swamp Thing believed for a long time that he was Alec Holland, transformed into a monster. He eventually discovered that he was merely plant matter that had absorbed Alec Holland's consciousness, and that Alec had actually died when he was first created.
Notes:

Alec Holland first appeared in Swamp Thing (DC, 1972 series) #1 (October-November 1972). It was revealed in The Saga of Swamp Thing (DC, 1982 series) #21 (February 1984) that Alec was not really the Swamp Thing, and in fact he had died when the Swamp Thing was created. Alec Holland's spirit was finally laid to rest in The Saga of Swamp Thing (DC, 1982 series) #28 (September 1984).
