Greg Sanders was a country singer known as "The Prairie Troubadour". When his father, a sheriff, was murdered by robbers holding up a stagecoach, Greg disguised himself and brought the criminals to justice. He decided to continue fighting crime as The Vigilante.

Golden Age: The Vigilante's first sidekick was Billy Gunn. He was soon replaced by a teen nicknamed Stuff.

Pre-Crisis Earth-One: When his sidekick Stuff was murdered, the Vigilante was joined by his son, Stuff Jr.

Post-Crisis New Earth/Earth-0: The Vigilante's first sidekick was Billy Gunn, his second was Daniel Leong (Stuff), and his third was Victor Leong (Stuff, brother of the original).
