Description:

Java was a Neanderthal discovered by Rex Mason and revived by inventor Simon Stagg using scientific means developed by Stagg's company. He was smitten with Stagg's daughter Sapphire, which began an intense rivalry between him and Rex Mason, a.k.a. Metamorpho. Java later married Sapphire at the insistence of Simon Stagg when it was believed that Rex was dead. The marriage ended when Java was murdered by Simon.

Java first appeared in The Brave and the Bold (DC, 1955 series) #57 (December 1964-January 1965). It was revealed in Justice League Europe (DC, 1989 series) #5 (August 1989) that he married Sapphire Stagg after Metamorpho was believed to have died. Java was murdered by Simon Stagg in Metamorpho (DC, 1993 series) #2 (September 1993). Simon was shown creating a duplicate of Java in Birds of Prey (DC, 1999 series) #52 (April 2003); Java appeared next, alive once again, in Doom Patrol (DC, 2004 series) #9 (April 2005). He became the Shaggy Man in The Outsiders (DC, 2009 series) #35 (February 2011).

First appearance of the New 52 Java in Legends of Tomorrow (DC, 2016 series) #1 (May 2016).

First appearance of the DC Rebirth Java in The Terrifics (DC, 2018 series) #1 (April 2018). He first appeared as Doc Dread in issue #6 (September 2018); identity revealed in issue #9 (December 2018).
