Captain America

English

Disambiguation: Steve Rogers, Earth-616

First published in: 1941

Description:
Steve Rogers, a scrawny kid from New York, was deeply disturbed by the reports of what the Nazis were doing in Europe. He attempted to enlist in the Army in late 1940, but was rejected because of his frail body. His determination drew the attention of General Chester Phillips, who offered Rogers an opportunity to take part in a top-secret experiment called Operation Rebirth. Rogers was given the Super-Soldier Serum by its creator Dr. Abraham Erskine, and was transformed into his peak physical form. A Nazi spy then killed Erskine before anyone could react. Because Erskine was so concerned that the serum would be stolen he had never written it down, and thus the secret died with him. Rogers donned a patriotic uniform and became Captain America.
Notes:

Captain America first appeared in Captain America Comics (Marvel, 1941 series) #1 (March 1941). His first appearance in the Marvel Universe was in The Avengers (Marvel, 1963 series) #4 (March 1964), where it was revealed he had been frozen in ice since 1945. He became Nomad from Captain America (Marvel, 1968 series) #180 (December 1974) to #183 (March 1975). He first used the codename "The Captain" in Captain America (Marvel, 1968 series) #336 (December 1987), but didn't wear The Captain's uniform until issue #337 (January 1988).
