Bucky Barnes first appeared as Captain America's sidekick, Bucky, in Captain America Comics (Marvel, 1941 series) #1 (March 1941). His first appearance in the Marvel Universe was in The Avengers (Marvel, 1963 series) #4 (March 1964), where his apparent death was shown in flashback. He first appeared unnamed as The Winter Soldier in Captain America (Marvel, 2005 series) #1 (January 2005); named in issue #8 (September 2005). He became Captain America in Captain America (Marvel, 2005 series) #34 (March 2008).
When the Silver Age stories established that Bucky had apparently died in April 1945, an explanation was needed for his appearances in stories published from May 1945 through December 1948 and from August 1953 through May 1954. In What If? (Marvel, 1977 series) #4 (August 1977), it was revealed that on April 30, 1945, William Naslund (the Spirit of '76) replaced Steve Rogers as Captain America and Fred Davis, Jr. replaced Bucky Barnes as Bucky. In that same issue, it was also revealed that in the Spring of 1946, Jeff Mace (the Patriot) replaced Naslund as the third Captain America. In Captain America (Marvel, 1968 series) #155 (November 1972), it was revealed that in the 1950s, William Burnside became the fourth Captain America and Jack Monroe became the third Bucky.
