Perry White first appeared in "The Adventures of Superman" radio serial. He was introduced in episode 2 on February 14, 1940 ("Clark Kent, Reporter"). His full name was revealed in episode 3 on February 16 ("Keno's Landslide").

The character first appeared in a comic book story as "Mr. White" in Superman (DC, 1939 series) #7 (November-December 1940). His first name was given in issue #10 (May-June 1941).

Perry White first said "Great Caesar's Ghost!" on the radio program on November 26, 1946, and first in comics in Superman (DC, 1939 series) #86 (January 1954). He first said "...and don't call me 'Chief'!" in Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (DC, 1954 series) #8 (October 1955).
