Gunner

English

Disambiguation: from Gunner and Sarge, World War II

First published in: 1959

Notes:

Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru.

Gunner first appeared in the Gunner & Sarge feature in All-American Men of War (DC, 1952 series) #67 (March 1959).

There has been conflicting information on what Gunner's surname is. According to (?)* and Bug! The Adventures of Forager (DC, 2017 series) #2 (August 2017), it is "MacKay". However, according to DC: The New Frontier (DC, 2004 series) #1 (March 2004) and Superman (DC, 2016 series) #8 (Early December 2016), it is "Wilson".

There has also been conflicting information on Gunner's fate. According to Crisis on Infinite Earths (DC, 1985 series) #3 (June 1985), in Pre-Crisis continuity he was killed by the Anti-Monitor's Shadow Demons in late Spring 1945 (narration refers to the end of the war in Europe, but incorrectly says 1944). The circumstances of his death in the Post-Crisis continuity were shown in The Losers Special (DC, 1985 series) #1 ([September] 1985). He was shown to be alive in 1976 in DCU: Legacies (DC, 2010 series) #4 (October 2010). According to Superman (DC, 2016 series) #8 (Early December 2016), he died on Dinosaur Island in 1945 (this was a sequel to the non-canon story in DC: The New Frontier (DC, 2004 series) #1 (March 2004)).

It is implied in Creature Commandos (DC, 2000 series) #1 (May 2000) and #2 (June 2000) that The Gunner who appears there is the same person as the Loser's Gunner, however this is not confirmed. The Creature Commandos's Gunner had "died on a beach in the South Pacific in 1945", and was resurrected in the modern day. This conflicts with the previously established information about the death of the Loser's Gunner, and thus he is treated as a separate character.
