Pooch

English

Disambiguation: from Gunner and Sarge, World War II

First published in: 1959

Notes:

Created by Robert Kanigher and Jerry Grandenetti.

The Pooch first appeared in the Gunner & Sarge feature in Our Fighting Forces (DC, 1954 series) #49 (September 1959). The dog's actual name was "Billy", but Gunner almost immediately began calling him "Pooch", and the name quickly caught on.

There has been conflicting information on Pooch's fate. The circumstances of his death in the Post-Crisis continuity were shown in The Losers Special (DC, 1985 series) #1 ([September] 1985). However, according in DCU: Legacies (DC, 2010 series) #4 (October 2010), Pooch died in some other manner (possibly of old age). According to Superman (DC, 2016 series) #8 (Early December 2016), he died on Dinosaur Island in 1945 (this was a sequel to the non-canon story in DC: The New Frontier (DC, 2004 series) #1 (March 2004)).
