Kahn wrote the book which covered the history of cryptography, from Ancient Egypt to what was known at the time the book was published in 1967 (the 1996 reprint added a chapter to cover codebreaking by Alan Turing and Bletchley Park and other events up to that year).
The National Security Agency (NSA) was able to get the publisher, Macmillan and Sons, to allow them to censor the original manuscript to remove references to NSA's work with their British counterpart without the author's permission.
