Biography: Painter, illustrator and comics artist who preferred to maintain his independence by staying outside the mainstream. His comics work appeared during the underground comix era in Yellow Dog and in his own title, The Captain (1972). In the decades that followed he created strikingly colored paintings featuring politically charged themes of environmentalism, militarism, consumerism and inequality. The work he created has received increased attention both in his late life and posthumously.
