Marvel's original Captain Marvel was Mar-Vell, an alien from the Kree Empire who settled on Earth. He appeared in his own feature in the 1960s and 1970s. The character was killed off in the early 1980s, but remained popular. Marvel re-used the name multiple times, usually with characters related to Mar-Vell. Supporting characters from this original incarnation include Carol Danvers, who later became the first Ms. Marvel and later still a different Captain Marvel. The feature also became part of Jim Starlin's original Thanos cycle in the 1970s.
