Synopsis
Betsy and her father run a desert gas station. One day Toby wanders in and is hired to help. Betsy tries to make friends but Toby is cold to her. She discovers an inscribed photo of actress Rosalind in Toby’s room and he says he was married to her. Betsy is shocked but Toby later says his wife died several years before; he’s a novelist and couldn’t write, but Betsy’s love has cured his writer’s block. Betsy and Toby will wed.
Harriet takes a cross-country train to a new job in California. On the journey, she meets Ed and they have an affair. However, when they arrive in Los Angeles, Ed is greeted by his wife and children. Harriet is “numb with sadness and disillusion!” and is “at the bottom of the abyss of heartache!” but she decides to “make the best of my mistake!”
Pat is engaged to Ted but he confesses he’s having an affair with diner waitress Daphne. He says he loves Pat and “Daphne is everything I hate and despise! Yet I can’t resist her!” They break up. Three months later, Ted asks Pat to take him back. Pat asks the readers of Love Problems to advise her if she can trust Ted or not.
Although boyfriend Johnny wants her to “forget all these career ideas” and marry him, Doris wants to be an artist. Middle-aged patron of the arts Rodney offers to help Doris. Doris allows Rodney to make love to her to repay his assistance. Doris breaks up with Johnny. Rodney finally allows Doris to have a show of her paintings: she is ridiculed by all. Rodney tells her “your talents are all in your face—not in your hands!!” and says she should forget her “ridiculous attempts at painting!” Doris leaves, vowing to study and become a great artist and “someday…ask for Johnny’s forgiveness…”

Synopsis
College teacher Valery marries Barry, an older student back in school because “the war had interrupted [his] education.” They have to keep their marriage a secret because it is against the college’s rules. Valery is jealous of Barry’s friendship with female student Sue. The truth comes out and Valery resigns so that Barry can stay and complete his education. They won’t have much money until he graduates and gets a real job, but they’ll be happy together.
