Since Aleira is now his liege lord, Avery constantly insists that he accompany her for her protection, and also demands that she listen to information he needs to impart. In both cases, Aliera spurns him. An intervention by Baba Yaga only leaves her more confused, while Avery's persistence causes her trouble at school.
Aliera; trolls (glamoured as transit police); fairies
Following Caroline's advice, Aliera returns to Grand Central Station, where she was first enabled to see the fairies. But she is seized by trolls, haled into a subway tunnel, and imprisoned in a cell in the dark. Retrieving her fencing foil from its bag, she discovers that the jewel in its hilt gives light.
Trying to rescue Aliera, Avery is returned to his original troll form when he re-enters the dark. Captured by the other trolls, he is imprisoned with Aliera. Although she does not trust him, they begin to work on an escape together.
Aliera's parents are preoccupied with Aunt Hannah's condition, so Avery and Aliera are able to separately slip away from the hospital. Aliera summons the Fairy Queen, who teaches her how to make herself invisible.
Aliera; fairies; trolls; monsters; Avery; Baba Yaga; Chris
The fairies, reappearing by night, guide Aliera to her supposedly-deserted fencing school, where she finds a horde of monsters holding her unconscious cousin. Realizing that her coach Chris is the Dark Lord, she begins a fencing duel with him, and seems to have lost until Avery bursts in with Baba Yaga. Aliera hands her foil to Avery, who uses its fairy steel to skewer the Dark Lord, provoking a battle royal with the monsters.
Aliera; Avery; Chris; Caroline; monsters; fairies; Baba Yaga
With Chris defeated, Baba Yaga takes possession of him, insisting that his life be spared. Banishing the monsters, she wakes Caroline, giving the three teens instructions (somewhat cryptic) as to what to do with their futures. Escorted by fairies the three exit the ruined fencing school, with Avery carrying the wheelchair-bound Caroline.
