Characters
Lieutenant Anna Kharkova; [Anna Borsinova Kharkova]; Colonel Golovyachev (commanding officer); Major Merkulov (political officer, or commissar); Private Meriutsa [Mouse] (female mechanic); air crew; ground crew
Synopsis
Demoted and transferred for habitual belligerence, Kharkova nevertheless is now assigned to a high-performance fighter aircraft. While she receives stern encouragement from the colonel, she's avoided as a weird loner -- not least because of her conversations with the long-dead Zoya. When the airfield is attacked the neophyte Merkulov panics, breaks down completely, and has to be taken away. Zoya opines that the colonel likes Anna.

Captain Anna Kharkova; [Anna Borsinova Kharkova]; Colonel Golovyachev (commanding officer); Private Meriutsa [Mouse] (female mechanic); air crew; ground crew; dying soldier
Synopsis
The Colonel, clearly enjoying Anna's company, takes her for a drive and informs her that because of heavy losses she is promoted back to captain, and given command of a flight. The entire unit is ambushed as they try to blunt the Nazi attack, but she commands well, breaking away from her insistence on going it alone, even praising and encouraging Mouse. When she is named a Hero of the Soviet Union she makes a drunken pass at the colonel, who tells her that although his wife was killed by Germans he considers himself married until the last invader has been driven from their homeland.

You're not putting me in charge of them...!
Genre
war
Characters
Captain Anna Kharkova; [Anna Borsinova Kharkova]; Colonel Golovyachev (commanding officer); Private Meriutsa [Mouse] (female mechanic); air crew; ground crew; neophyte pilots; Captain Bobrov (political officer, or commissar)
Synopsis
Because of staggering losses, Anna is assigned six new female pilots, all scarcely trained to fly, barely introduced to the fighter plane, and with no preparation for combat. She grounds them all, but while she and Golovyachev are fighting the new political officer orders them up. Anna and the colonel set off to find them, but he is killed, forcing her to face the truth that she no longer wants to be alone. She finds her pilots, who have hung back because of fear, talks them into formation, and leads them home.
