Synopsis

Nelson Mandela is born into a chief's family, but when his father asserts his authority the magistrate confiscates his land, home, and cattle. After the death of Mandela's father, the Regent sponsors the young man's education, even at the almost-unprecedented university level, grooming him as a counselor to the king. Conflicts with the regent, and with the university principal, lead Mandela and Justice (the regent's son) to steal some of the regent's cattle, sell them, and escape to Johannesburg.

Synopsis

Mandela continues his studies, begins practicing law, marries, and becomes a father. But he is increasingly politicized, especially once Malan's new Nationalist government clamps down with even harsher oppression and segregation. Mandela and the A.N.C. demand African leadership in the struggle, but also form alliances. After a series of strikes and demonstrations -- some murderously put down -- Mandela and 155 other leaders are arrested for treason. Even as he is taken his wife, despairing of his incessant absences, has already decided to leave him.

Synopsis

The treason trial lumbers along in fits and starts, while demonstrations are met with massacres. Eventually the court rejects charges against the defendants, but bans, apartheid, and arbitrary arrests continue. Mandela goes underground and continues organizing, becoming known as "the Black Pimpernel." At length the A.N.C. begins a program of sabotage under Mandela's command, even as Chief Luthuli receives the Nobel Prize.

Synopsis

Mandela slips from the country to meet African leaders and attend a conference. After his return he and other leaders are arrested; Mandela attends court in his leopardskin kaross. Sabotage accompanies his conviction. When the court dismisses new charges, police immediately re-arrest the defendants. In the next trial Mandela makes a dramatic speech, and others testify to having been tortured, but the court finds them guilty. They are haled to Robben Island for life.

Synopsis

Mandela and his comrades suffer both torture and petty humiliation. They band together, acting collectively against their mistreatment and in pursuit of negotiations. They also use their close association to teach and to learn, and to work out plans and philosophies for the movement. They are cut of from their families almost entirely; Winnie Mandela suffers repeated banishment, bans, and arrests. Despite concealment and disinformation, news of their situation slowly reaches the outer world. After 18 years, Mandela is abruptly taken off the island.

Synopsis

Moved to a more salubrious prison, Mandela and his comrades gain increased communication with the outside world. The South African Nationalist government offers concessions in national life, and even grants a few, but the leaders of the movement refuse to compromise in exchange for the concessions. Demonstrations, sabotage, and international pressure continue. New president De Klerk begins making major concessions, including the legalization of all political parties and release of key prisoners. On February 11, 1990, after 27 years, Mandela goes free without preconditions.

Synopsis

In freedom at last, Mandela enters into frustrating stop-and-go negotiations with the government, even as the armed struggle continues. Radical white conservatives fight against negotiations, while some African groups try to strike out on their own -- a movement promoted and even armed by the white radicals. Internal violence and police violence kill hundreds. Even so, Mandela receives the Nobel Peace Prize. Demcocratic elections are finally scheduled, campaigned for, and conducted. The A.N.C. wins a healthy majority, and De Klerk graciously concedes defeat. Power transfer is at hand.

Synopsis

As president, Mandela struggles to bring together a country riven by hate, prejudice, resentment, opportunism, and fear. He is also repeatedly called upon to help end conflicts in other nations. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission brings out the wrongs of the past, without exacting revenge. Once Mandela retires he establishes several foundations to improve treatment of children, and to develop leadership and reconciliation. His legacy is in all our hands.
