Murray is a lawyer, he wears a suit, he isn't hip, and he even lives in the non-trendy section of the Mission. Though he's been there for years people pretty much ignore him, until one of the bartenders at his favorite joint is arrested. Murray gets him out, and from that time is acknowledged and even welcomed around the District. After ten years, it's nice to fit in.
