Shigeru is sent on a hopeless mission with a small unit; all involved expect to die. As the others sleep in an abandoned barracks, Shigeru keeps lackadaisical watch until the barracks is blown up. As Shigeru flees with the enemy in pursuit, his mother has a vivid dream of him in exactly this situation. Shigeru's parents pray wildly for his safe return.
