Synopsis

In the future, Captain Geordi La Forge commands the Enterprise with Commander Data as his first officer. They encounter a Federation ship from the distant future, whose crew is in danger of dying. When Geordi and Data offer assistance, the captain of the timeship refuses their help as it would violate the Prime Directive.

This story is set in the future of the Star Trek: The Next Generation timeline. In this future, Data's consciousness has been uploaded into the Enterprise computer. As a result, Data can manage all bridge functions without the need of a bridge crew.

Although not named, one of the admirals appears to be Jean-Luc Picard. The way Geordi addresses this admiral helps to validate his identity.
