Ed turns up at Al's diner hungry and looking for a job. Eileen falls for him, but he disappears when the diner is robbed. Eileen can't beleive the thief is Ed and tracks him down to discover is is an ex-con, convicted of manslaughter in self-defense. Eileen convinces him to return and prove his innocent. The couple return to find the real criminal has already been caught.
Val gets a break by being part of Phil's magazine profile about a day in the life of an aspiring actress. Phil falls for Val, but she refuses to leave her career to marry him and gets angry at his warning that she doesn't have the talent to succeed and will be soon forgotten along with his magazine feature. When his prediction comes true, she packs to head home. But Phil proposes again, predicting she will be a success as a wife.
Mona plans to get rich and to split up Nancy and Johnny by linking him up with a gambling syndicate. Johnny won't go along with the scheme for him to throw his next big football game. He doesn't need their help, but Nancy and Bill follow to be witnesses.
Reporter Joan is convinced her new man, Paul Thompson, should run for State Senator. She starts a media-driven campaign, but Paul wants a grass-roots approach. They fight over the failing campaign and separate, giving Paul the chance to do it his way. After Paul wins, he tells Joan that he needs her desperately, not as campaign manager, but as a wife.
