Trudy joins the Army Nurse Corps after her best friend’s husband is killed in Korea. Trudy blames officer Bob for the death. When a wounded Bob arrives at a hospital in Japan, Trudy contemplates letting him die but can’t do it. Army Intelligence asks Trudy to get to know Bob, who’s suspected of giving information to the enemy. Bob is cleared of suspicion and Trudy also learns he wasn’t to blame for the death of her friend’s husband. Bob and Trudy get married.
Paula marries boxer Gene. Her ex-boyfriend Duke tells Paula to have Gene throw his next fight or Duke will tell him about Paula’s past. Paula refuses and decides to commit suicide by driving her car off a cliff; Duke tries to stop her but he is killed instead. Gene, none the wiser, wins his fight.
Grace shares a train berth with her friend Ronny, then accidentally crawls into bed with someone else. When Grace wakes, she sees a note from the unknown person. She’ll never know if it was a man or a woman.
After wealthy Gregory knocks down a would-be mugger, Irene falsely claims the crook was her brother and died as a result. She blackmails Gregory into marrying her. She decides it would be more pleasant if Gregory liked her, so she tries to change her ways. While they’re out of his boat, Gregory says he could easily kill Irene if she pushes him any further. Irene will try to be a good wife from now on.
Debbie writes to blind soldier Paul to improve his morale. When he arrives to visit her, Debbie doesn’t admit her identity and says Debbie got married a week before. She doesn’t want Paul to know that her letters detailing her active lifestyle were lies: she’s permanently disabled and can’t walk.
Cathy takes in an amnesiac wanderer and names him Jim. They fall in love and are married. Some time later, Jim leaves to try and discover his identity. Eight years later, Cathy and her daughter see “noted architect” Jeff on the street. He doesn’t recognize them, but Cathy knows this is her husband “Jim,” who will never meet his daughter.
Lillian, traveling to meet her husband Bill, misses a bus and accepts a ride from a stranger. The man tries to rape her; she knocks him out and escapes. She later reads a newspaper story that says the man is dead, and a woman is being sought for questioning. Lillian prepares to flee but Bill comes home and says the murderer, a man, was caught trying to pawn the victim’s valuables. Lillian will never reveal her secret.
