Synopsis
Young attorney Frank spends the summer in a rural community and falls in love with farm girl Ruth. However, the other members of the community, led by Peter, call him an “Outlander” and when Ruth’s father dies they consider Ruth and Frank “outcasts.” Frank agrees to stay and work the farm, but no one will help them. When a tornado strikes, Frank saves Peter’s life and this changes the community’s attitude about him and Ruth.

Synopsis
Janet is married to lazy gambler Frank; he dies in a fire and she is also assumed dead, but survives and starts a new life under her maiden name. Foreman Larry falls in love with Janet, but is unaware she was married before. Janet’s former sister-in-law Edith gets a job at the factory. Edith dates Larry but he prefers Janet; Edith tells him Janet’s story to explain Janet’s secretive ways, then departs. Larry and Janet will be married.

Synopsis
Edna’s family urges her to get married then protest when she dates Phil, a mechanic, since her sisters married middle-class businessmen. Edna says “Beggars can’t be choosers!” and marries Phil. He likes his work and refuses the family’s offers of help. When Edna has a baby, her family takes over and Phil doesn’t like their ideas about raising a child. He finally snaps and tells them off, and Edna realizes “he was so much better than the men my sisters married! Always had been!”

Steve is rescued and Mart realizes “we can’t force love”--he steps aside so his brother and Cathy will be happy.
