Magneto and his new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants steal a freighter and use it to take over the South American nation of Santo Marco. The X-Men invade and take the country back. Xavier is caught in an explosion and loses his mental powers.
While the X-Men try to figure out a way to bring Xavier out of his coma, he is re-living an old adventure in his head where he met Gabrielle Haller and he and Magneto battled Baron Strucker for Nazi gold. This snaps Charles out of his coma and there is much rejoicing. The X-Men travel to Lilandra's ship to attend a farewell banquet but Deathbird spoils the fun by transporting them all to a Brood ship.

Fearing for his aunt's health and tired of being hounded by Jameson, Peter gives up being Spider-Man and concentrates on being a simple college student. A kid finds the discarded Spidey suit in the trash can and brings it to the Daily Bugle where Jonah proudly puts it on display. Pete's personal life starts looking up but crime increases as the Kingpin gathers the mob under his leadership. Feeling guilty about the crime wave, Peter remembers the lessons taught to him by his uncle's death and decides to become Spider-Man once again.
Thinking his wife is dead, Kingpin takes control of the mob and hires Bullseye as his assassin. Daredevil comes calling and takes Bullseye down, but leaves the Kingpin in power to rebuild his organization.

Kang appears and demands to be made ruler of the Earth. The Avengers attempt to stop him, but it comes down to Wasp and the Teen Brigade to slow Kang long enough for the rest of the Avengers to free themselves and put an end to Kang's threat.

A young historian from Taiwan crosses to the mainland to awake the dragon Fin Fang Foom and foil a communist invasion. He lures the dragon to the coast to wreck the invasion fleet, and then lures it back to its layer before restoring its mystical slumber.

The Pentagon sends Iron Man into red China to get information on the Mandarin, an evil scientist feared even by the Communist regime. Iron Man struggles to overcome the Mandarin's powerful rings and martial arts, but he escapes his castle.

In a dying universe, on the planet of Taa, scientist Galan tries to find a way for his race to survive the end of the universe. He commandeers a spaceship towards the center of the imploding universe, but he does not die in "the big crunch". Instead, he gestates in a cocoon for billions of years in a newly-formed universe. When he emerges, it is as Galactus, and he has to feed upon the lifeforce of planets.
