This story is a reasonably accurate fictionalised account of the destruction of the Dresden-Class Light Cruiser SMS Emden in November 1914. In reality the Emden's second-in-command was Captain-Lieutenant Helmut von Mücke, not 'Heinrich'. Though the second's name in this story is incorrect, von Mücke did survive his ship's destruction while commanding a landing party, as depicted.
