Synopsis
Alsind and Satyricus enlist the aid of a number of supposedly-mythological beasts from Barmak's bestiary to kill the Caliph. However, they find themselves in opposition to Arak, Valda, and Malagigi, who feel duty-bound to protect the ruler. At the end, the various beasts are dead and it looks like Arak will have to fight an enraged Alsind, but Sharizad announces she has joined the Caliph's harem and asks, piercingly, if Alsind will kill her, too. Defeated, Alsind drops his weapons and they all begin searching for the villainous Barmak. But, the basilisk found him first...

Synopsis
Alsind is near death, but Arak manages to use his shaman magic to cure the boy. But, a recovered Alsind then attacks the Caliph, naming him a usurper. In a rage, Harun orders that a game of shatranj (a variant of chess) be played...with living pieces! On one side, played by Sharizad, Arak stands with his friends. On the other side, the Caliph's guardsmen. Sharizad manages to defeat Harun (after a few savage battles by her "pieces") and agrees to marry him. Alsind now realizes that he will never be Caliph, and he volunteers to accompany Arak on the quest for Arak's homeland.

Synopsis
Arak and friends board a ship to search for Arak's homeland. Not long into the voyage, though, a vicious storm hits and Valda is washed overboard and disappears. When the ship chances upon an island, Arak disembarks with Satyricus to investigate. There, they find a city whose populace has gathered at the arena to watch Valda fight for her life against a huge bull. Arak and Satyricus jump to her aid and kill the beast, but Arak's friends are then swallowed by a fissure in the ground. To his horror, Arak realizes the high priestess of the island is none other than his old foe, Angelica!

Synopsis
Tinker creates muskets that would allow all men to be equal and not have to depend on soldiers to protect them from Ogres. Unfortunately, the soldiers like their position in society and destroy the weapon and kill Tinker to keep the status quo.
