Carla is carried off and killed by the Swamp Men when Ralph is not able to save her because the gun he was using only had blanks due to Carla replacing the bullets with blanks in an effort to get Ralph killed.

- Conan travels home to Cimmeria only to discover that his childhood sweetheart, Mala, has been abducted by a band of Vanir raiders. He pursues them by boat and comes across a ship with dead Vanir and Picts next to a dark idol. Conan takes the idol and heads for the Isle of Swords, where Thorfel the Fair is about to marry Mala. Bur rather than giving herself to Thorfel, Mala kills herself. Conan kills Thorfel and receives unexpected help from a band of Picts who have come to the island looking for their dark idol.

- Synopsis
- Conan becomes Captain of the royal guard in the small city-state of Zahmahn as well as the lover of Queen Fatima. When the Queen catches Conan with the servant girl Yaila in a delicate situation, she leaves them in the dungeon to be devoured by the Dweller in the Dark. They manage to escape, however, and Conan throws the Queen to the monster. According to tradition, Zahmahn can only be ruled by a female sovereign, so Conan nominates Yaila as the new queen.

- When Ka-Zar goes in search of missing women and men from a local village, he finds Iranda and the Lizard Men. She takes him to her castle where he sees one of the missing women. When he tries to rescue her, the Lizard Men attack him. He is barely able to escape but when he does, he takes Iranda's crown with him. With her crown gone, at moonrise her enchantment wears off and she becomes a Lizard being. After she dies, her enchantments fade and the Lizard Men turn back into the missing warriors from the village.

When they take a shortcut through the Misty Mountains, they are attacked by the Demons of the Summit. Jamal is killed and Shanya is taken to Shangara, leader of the summit people. He wants to use Shanya as a mate for himself and his son until Conan rescues her.
