Issue Notes

The Golden House of Samarkand is a single long Corto Maltese story created by Hugo Pratt in the early 1980s. The setting moves from Rhodes to Turkey, Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, and Central Asia in the years 1921-1922. Guido Fuga contributed with artwork of cars and machine-guns.

Translated from Pratt's original Italian scripts.

Published in Italian as "La casa dorata di Samarcanda" and in French as "La Maison dorée de Samarkand".

Synopsis
After the "Fable of Venice", Corto is in Rhodes and begins searching for a treasure hidden by Alexander the Great in Afghanistan - a pretext to free Rasputin from a prison. To do this, he crosses three emerging states - the Turkish Republic, the Soviet Union and Reza Pahlavi's Iran - and meets various cultures.

The original publication began simultaneously in Italy in the magazine Linus (see reprint links) and in French in the magazine (À Suivre) from #31-32 (August-September 1980) to #37 (February 1981). This interupted content corresponds to the first 22.5 pages of the story in the book.

The first story page in the book is a black-and-white reproduction of watercolor painted comic panels that were published in color in Linus. The following 21.5 pages have been edited after the original publication, the lower half of the 13th story page was not part of the original publication in (À Suivre).

The original publication was resumed and completed in Italy in the magazine Corto Maltese (see reprint links).
