He runs into a "Chamber of Horrors" at a local carnival and manages to get the upper hand over the hero and ties him to a guillotine. But, lightning strikes the blade and, trying to dodge it, Black Seven stumbles backwards into a pit, complete with death-dealing spikes.

The story inspires him that, while he is able, he can devote himself to fighting for freedom and do some kind of service for his country. And, while he can do that, he's not a burden.
