Du Bois was not assigned to write Wild Bill Elliott. Apparently, Lebeck editorially retasked this story, with mild editorial rewrite, from Roy Rogers (no Roy Rogers story was published with the title "Medicine Trail") to Wild Bill Elliott. The title and page count tally, and there are Du Bois identifiers.
Du Bois identifiers:
NATIVE PEOPLES: Apaches.
LANGUAGE: Apache talk (a made-up language, as also found in other Du Bois stories); and the sly double meaning of "medicine" in the title, spiritual and pharmaceutical.
RELIGION: Apache medicine man.
ANIMALS: The sidewinder rattlesnake advances the plot by being the means by which the Lawmen discover how the heroin is being transported.
ANIMAL "SPEECH": The horses speak in horse sounds, in particular the last panel "Ho-ho-ho," a common Du Bois horse sound.
