Myrtle is a telephone operator in a small town; she’s friends with lineman Red Cady, but refuses to consider him as a romantic partner. A new dam is being constructed nearby, under the supervision of Neil Dwight. Myrtle begins dating Neil, but discovers he’s built the dam out of shoddy materials. As the dam begins to break, Myrtle warns the townspeople to flee to high ground. Neil is arrested and Myrtle realizes she loves Red.
Toy factory worker Ella falls for new manager Dick Cole, but factory owner Cora Mosby is also interested in him. Cora tries to use her friend Frank to make Dick think Ella is cheating on him, but the plot is exposed. Dick quits and will marry Ella.

Teacher Alice Troy meets Burt, the older brother of one of her students. Burt is an engineer and thinks Alice is too staid but they are mutually attracted. Alice nearly loses her job because nerdy principal Merckle is also interested in her, but all is resolved happily.
Heiress Doris Malcolm rejects the romantic advances of Don Mobry. When he discovers she spends her evenings at a local dance hall that caters to sailors, Doris explains she fell in love during the war with naval officer Dave. Dave left her when he discovered she was rich, and now she comes to the dance hall hoping to find him again. Dave shows up and Doris explains she gave her fortune to her younger sister Kit. Dave and Doris reconcile, and Don thinks maybe he’ll date Kit now.
