Donna and Rick are engaged, but Rick is smitten by the slinky Mardi and goes off with her to New York. Donna follows and tricks Mardi into admitting she considers Rick a “yokel” and that she goes out with him “strictly for laughs!” Rick overhears and returns to Donna.
17-year-old Marsha and her wealthy father return to the USA after 10 years in Europe. Marsha doesn’t fit in at first, but makes friends with Sally. Marsha and Sally’s brother Bill fall in love, but she is shocked to learn he’s working as a mechanic because he can’t afford college. Bill thinks she’s a snob and breaks up with her. Marsha gets a job as a waitress to prove she’s no snob. Bill finds her there and apologizes; they reconcile.

Lana dates Dev but he doesn’t “stir” her. Dev gives her 3 days to decide if she loves him or not. Lana goes to a friend’s desert cabin to think, discovering astronomer Scott and his sister Audrey are already there. Lana and Scott fall in love. Dev arrives with news of a job offer, and falls in love with Audrey, so Lana doesn’t even have to break up with him.
Julie falls in love with truck driver Steve, but he moves to Alaska to become a fisherman. She follows him there, only to discover local resident Becky considers Steve "her man." Julie is consoled by Steve’s partner Hank. Steve and Becky run off, taking all the money Steve and Hank have earned. Julie decides to go home, but Hank says she can stay: as his wife.
