Amy and Tom are engaged but he's sent to fight in Korea. She enlists as an Army nurse and also goes there. They meet in the war zone. Tom is afraid she'll be killed, but he's the one who's injured. He recovers but wants to marry Amy now and she refuses, not wishing to face the possibility of one of them dying. They are both caught up in the turmoil of battle and finally realise they love each other deeply.

Helen's boyfriend Jim is drafted. She goes to visit him in camp, and thinks they'll be able to have a wild time since her parents aren't around. Jim doesn't want to betray her parents' trust, so she dates the worldly Roger. The lecherous Roger has no intention of marrying her, however, and Helen runs back to the safe Jim.
Janet's longtime boyfriend Paul is sentenced to life in prison. Detective Steve Howard urges Janet to forget about the no-good criminal. Paul escapes and, jealous of Janet's friendship with Steve, threatens to kill her. Steve rescues Janet and arrests Paul.
Lynn and Richie fall in love but he's drafted and sent to Korea. She agrees to date Fred, but only platonically. Lynn thinks she may be falling for Fred, and writes a "Dear John" letter to Richie but never mails it: Richie has been killed in action. Lynn vows to be faithful to him for the rest of her life.
